Amendments in Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir approved

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved the amendments in the special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir by including students who pass the Class XII or equivalent exam from CBSE-affiliated schools located in Jammu & Kashmir. Earlier this scheme was open to only those students who passed the Class XII or the equivalent exam from the J&K Board.

This would increase the inclusivity of the scheme and would make many more students eligible to avail of the benefit under this scheme. This revision would be effective from the academic year 2011-12.

Background:

An Expert Group was constituted by the Prime Minister on 18th August, 2010 in the context of enhancing employment opportunities in Jammu & Kashmir and to formulate jobs plan involving the public and private sectors. Among the key recommendations of the Expert Group, one was to offer fresh scholarships per annum over the next five years to encourage the youth of J&K to pursue higher studies outside the State of J&K. Accordingly, a Central Sector Scheme was devised for payment of scholarship to students belonging to the State of J&K, pursuing general degree courses, engineering, medical studies and other professional courses in government colleges/institutes/other reputed institutes located outside the State of J&K.
